Dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1951, to "stand as a magnificent monument to Marines of the past as well as a source of inspiration and opportunity for Marines of the future." Inscribed in cast stone around the building are the names of major battles and conflicts in which the Marine Corps was involved since its founding in 1776 through Vietnam.
